“Motorcycle Gang” is a 1994 TV movie directed by John Milius and originally aired on the cable television network Showtime on August 5, 1994, as part of the anthology series Rebel Highway1. The movie tells the story of a family traveling through the Southwest circa 1959-60 wherein they run afoul of a small gang of criminal bikers2. The daughter is kidnapped and taken into Mexico2. Review: The movie features an all-star cast including Gerald McRaney as Cal Morris, Jake Busey as Jake, and Carla Gugino as Leann Morris3. Jake Busey plays the charismatic bike leader and does it well. The father is played by Gerald McRaney (Major Dad), who’s always perfect for father-type roles. One of the highlights is Carla Gugino (Silk Spectre in “Watchmen”) as the daughter3. Description: The plot follows army veteran Cal Morris and his family as they are driving on the highway to their new home in California. They are terrorized by a motorcycle gang along the highway. When the gang kidnaps Cal’s daughter Leann and takes her to Mexico, Cal and his wife pursue them1. History: The movie is part of the anthology series Rebel Highway, where its name is taken from a 1950s B-movie but its plot bears no resemblance to that film1. The film was directed by John Milius, who considers it one of his favorites1. When asked why he chose to remake Motorcycle Gang, Milius said "Why not? I never saw it. I just took a story that was kind of endemic to the period. What happened in those movies is that they always had a family crossing the desert and the family is beset by giant ants, cannibals or a hot rod or motorcycle gang. So in this one I have a dysfunctional family beset by a motorcycle gang"1. Production: The film was produced by Lou Arkoff, Debra Hill, Willie Kutner, David Giler (co-producer), and Llewellyn Wells with a budget of $1.3 million1. The cinematography was done by Anthony B. Richmond and edited by Mark Helfrich1. Just before filming was to begin, the Jan. 17 Northridge earthquake interrupted shooting plans. Milius said, "We couldn’t get to any of the locations since mine was by far, location-wise and production-wise, the most ambitious of all of them because it all takes place out-of-doors and in the desert. We couldn’t get to any of those places, so we had to find alternate ways of doing it. I thought it was very challenging and I enjoyed the challenge a great deal"1
