“La Piel que Habito” (also known as “The Skin I Live In”) is a Spanish thriller and melodrama film directed by Pedro Almodóvar and based on the novel “Mygale” by Thierry Jonquet. It stars Antonio Banderas, Elena Anaya, Marisa Paredes, and Jan Cornet. The film follows Robert Ledgard, a brilliant plastic surgeon who is haunted by the death of his wife in a car accident and the rape of his daughter by a young man named Vicente. Robert develops a new type of synthetic skin that is resistant to any kind of damage and uses it to transform Vicente into a woman who resembles his wife. He keeps him/her captive in his clinic under the name of Vera Cruz. The film explores the themes of identity, obsession, revenge, and madness, as well as the ethical implications of Robert’s experiments. Robert treats Vera as his lover and his creation, but he also faces the opposition of his housekeeper Marilia, who is his biological mother and Vicente’s kidnapper. Vera tries to escape from Robert’s control and to regain his/her true self. The film ends with a shocking twist, where Vera reveals that he/she has regained his/her memory and kills Robert and Marilia. He/she then flees to reunite with his/her mother, who recognizes him/her despite his/her appearance. The film leaves the audience wondering about Vera’s future and identity.
