Sade (2000) Summary: “Sade” is a French film released in 2000, directed by Benoît Jacquot. The film is a fictional account of the last years of the infamous French aristocrat and writer, Marquis de Sade. The film primarily depicts the few months during the Reign of Terror when the Marquis de Sade (played by Daniel Auteuil) was held at the Picpus clinic, from the end of March 1794 until after the fall of Robespierre, which allowed him to narrowly escape the guillotine. Description: The film begins with Sade being transferred to a detention center and rest home where he relives one more time the highlights of his youth. At the Picpus clinic, where the minor nobility and aristocracy under arrest kill time and try to escape the scaffold by bribing jailers, Sade arrives preceded by his scandalous reputation as a libertine and immoral writer. Despite this, through his courageous frankness, often biting humor, and manners entirely befitting the gentleman he is, he manages to earn the esteem, even friendship, of several co-detainees. Plot: One of these co-detainees is Emilie, the daughter of Vicomte de Lancris. Sade initiates her into sensuality and teaches her to enjoy every moment of life according to his philosophy based on profiting from the present moment and solid atheism. Regularly, Sade receives visits from his former mistress Marie-Constance Quesnet, nicknamed “Sensible”, who lives with Étienne Fournier, a conventional man close to Robespierre. As Terror intensifies and the scaffold draws nearer, Fournier arranges for Sade’s death sentence pronounced by Fouquier-Tinville to be postponed to give him time to escape.
