“Lipstick” is a rape and revenge thriller film directed by Lamont Johnson and released in 1976. It stars Margaux Hemingway as Chris McCormick, a successful fashion model who is brutally raped by Gordon Stuart, her sister’s music teacher, played by Chris Sarandon. Anne Bancroft plays Carla Bondi, a lawyer who defends Chris in court. Mariel Hemingway, Margaux’s real-life sister, plays Kathy McCormick, a 14-year-old girl who witnesses the rape. The film begins with Chris posing for a lipstick advertisement on the beach, accompanied by Kathy, who is interested in music and has a crush on Stuart. Stuart invites Kathy to his apartment to play his compositions, and Chris agrees to drop her off. However, when Chris returns to pick up Kathy, she finds Stuart raping her sister. She tries to stop him, but he overpowers her and rapes her as well. Kathy manages to escape and call for help. Chris decides to press charges against Stuart, despite his threats and pleas. She hires Bondi, a feminist lawyer who believes in her case. However, in court, Stuart’s defense attorney portrays Chris as a promiscuous and provocative woman who seduced Stuart and then accused him of rape out of spite. The jury acquits Stuart, leaving Chris and Kathy devastated and humiliated. The film ends with Chris and Kathy moving to a secluded cabin in the mountains to start a new life. However, Stuart tracks them down and breaks into their home, intending to rape them again. This time, Chris fights back with a shotgun and kills him. She then applies lipstick on his corpse, as a symbol of her revenge.
