“Bastard Out of Carolina” is a drama film directed by Anjelica Huston and released in 1996. It is based on the novel by Dorothy Allison and adapted by Anne Meredith. It stars Jena Malone as Ruth Anne “Bone” Boatwright, a young girl who suffers physical and sexual abuse from her stepfather, Glen Waddell, played by Ron Eldard. Jennifer Jason Leigh plays Anney Boatwright, Bone’s mother who loves her but is unable to protect her from Glen. The film is set in 1950s South Carolina, where Bone is born out of wedlock to Anney, a poor and hardworking woman who tries to give her daughter a better life. Anney marries Lyle Parsons, who dies in a car accident, leaving her pregnant with another child. She then marries Glen, who seems to be a kind and caring man at first, but soon reveals his violent and jealous nature. He beats and molests Bone, while Anney turns a blind eye to his abuse. The film shows how Bone struggles to cope with her trauma and find her identity in a harsh and hostile environment. She finds some comfort in the love and support of her extended family, especially her uncles Earle and Wade, played by Lyle Lovett and Dermot Mulroney. She also develops a friendship with Shannon Pearl, a Jewish girl who is also an outsider in their town. However, Bone’s life becomes more unbearable as Glen’s attacks escalate and Anney becomes more dependent on him. The film ends with a brutal scene where Glen rapes Bone in their home, while Anney is away giving birth to their son. Bone manages to escape and runs to her aunt Raylene’s house, where she is taken care of by her family. Anney arrives and confronts Glen, who denies his crime. She then chooses to stay with him and leave Bone behind, breaking her daughter’s heart. The film closes with Bone looking at the sky with Raylene, hoping for a better future.
